BORO Workshop
Boro or Ranru workshop with KOBO A-B. Boroboro translates as old and tattered and is the most commonly used term when referring to the Japanese textile practice of patching or repairing garments using fragments or scraps of cloth. The workshop begins with an introduction to BORO, looking at pieces from the KOBO A-B, BORO collection, we will then introduce you to and teach you the basics of Sashiko stitching and the patching/construction process of creating a BORO-inspired piece (Artefact).
What you will learn:
How to use mending stitches. The application of repair and mending techniques, using scraps of both modern and vintage Japanese fabric. The use of visible repair stitch techniques to enhance and strengthen textiles. New approaches to creating textile projects, using fabric scraps with traditional stitching techniques.
KOBO A-B will provide:
Fabric, needles and thread for your usage and we also have examples of BORO work and stitching styles, together with several reference books available, for you to look at and refer to. Tutor biography:
KOBO A–B is a collaboration between Hiroko & Nigel Aono-Billson. It began as an extension of their home and the collection of things within it. Their ambition has been to introduce traditional Japanese heritage and culture through the objects and items that personify the skills and labours of Japanese craft makers.
The pieces that they have had in both their physical and online shops have been carefully selected, with all products and items principally from Japan, though more recently they have added a pieces made by makers in this country that complement their approach and philosophy. Currently in a transitional phase, KOBO A-B has no immediate plans for a new high-street presence, but continue to run their BORO workshops and the occasional pop–up shop and event.
