Course summary:

Learn how to make cordage (string) from a variety of plants, including common garden plants and a vegetable or two. You will learn different ways of preparing the various plants to extract their fibres for making into natural cordage.  A range of samples will be shown to inspire you on how to incorporate cordage into your own craft projects.

String has many varied uses, and can be seen as the basis of human culture.  Some would argue that it’s one of the main skills that makes us human, as it has been key to our survival and evolution as a species.  When you make your own, you’ll never look at a humble ball of twine in the same way again!

Suitable for all levels, including beginners, groups are kept small to allow for individual attention.

Tutor Biography:

Ruby Taylor, founder of Native Hands, is inspired by working with natural materials foraged from woods, hedgerows and the land where a dialogue emerges between her hands and the materials.  Immersed in the whole cycle of production: harvesting in a sustainable way and processing the raw materials to create functional and sculptural pieces.

Usually teaching groups in the woodlands of East Sussex, Ruby brings her popular courses indoors with Atelier Beside the Sea during the winter months to continue sharing her unique approach to this craft.

Ruby is passionate about helping people develop their skills and creativity whilst developing their connection to the natural world.  With over 30 years’ experience, her teaching method comes with clarity, patience and humour.
