The red columns of the atrium form a strong rhythm through the composition, framing views into the surrounding rooms and revealing details of the decoration. I was particularly interested in the contrast between the Pompeian red stucco, pale stone and marble, and the strong Mediterranean light. The composition also includes smaller architectural details, including a distinctive marble water basin with a truncated, fluted-column form. Its shape and texture provide a strong visual element alongside the columns, floors and fragments of decoration. A cat completes the scene. Cats are a familiar presence around the archaeological site of Ercolano, moving between the ruins and surrounding gardens and buildings. Here, the cat is shown resting in the shade among the remains of the ancient house.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiclée print.
