A fun morning session for 12 to 17 year olds where you can make you own silver ring to wear!
Starting from a piece of sheet sterling silver you will learn how to cut, shape, form and texture metal to create a special piece of jewellery.
Recreating the textures from shells, pebbles and our wonderful coastal views out of the workshop, Laila will expertly guide you through the process one step at a time. Starting off by getting your ring measurement, you will learn how to cut the metal to size to get a perfect fit. Before tackling the silver there will be pieces of copper to have a practice with first, so you leave with exactly the ring you wanted.
This workshop does not involve soldering with a flame and is a perfect starting point for anyone interested in making.
There will be two tutors for this session to make sure every member of the group gets plenty of help and supervision.
Laila Smith is a jeweller based on the south coast of England. She designs and makes simple, elegant jewellery using geometric forms that are crisp and beautifully crafted. The work is made in solid silver with gold vermeil accents as well as a range of 18ct gold and silver rings and currently details an obsession with geometry.
Scott Millar is an experienced goldsmith and tutor based in Brighton. His work uses a combination of silver and 18ct yellow gold in with colourful gemstones to create fun, refined, elegant and playful jewellery. Using handmade traditional techniques, Scott's modern approach to mixing colours and materials leads to striking pieces.
