Course summary:

Soft Iron Wire is the perfect expressive medium for drawing in three dimensions and it is ideal for expressing movement and drama. Over the course of three days, working from drawings and photographs you will make a small-scale animal sculpture suitable for an indoor or garden setting.

To make an animal sculpture using soft iron wire, pliers and simple wire working techniques which are easily transferable to a home studio setting. Students works at their own pace with the benefit of tutor demonstration, individual tuition and shared group discussions.

We begin with a practical introduction making quick wire sketches exploring some of the expressive possibilities within the technique. At this stage you should get a feel for the tools, creating different types of structure, line and texture in wire and how this might relate to your intended project.

We will discuss how to solve practical problems, working through different stages of the build in logical order, making stable structures building mass and final presentation.

Tutor Biography:

Linda Lewin is an artist-jeweller, based in the Scottish borders. Linda trained in Sheffield and has more than forty years’ experience making commission work, exhibiting with galleries and teaching students from her studio. She studied ancient jewellery techniques including chain making and granulation in 22ct. Gold, in New York in 2000. This experience changed the way she approaches her work with metal, feeling empowered to be part of a continuing jewellery making tradition going back thousands of years.

All materials are provided by Atelier Beside the Sea, although you may wish to collect some visual reference materials and a sketchbook and pencil to make notes and sketch out ideas.
