Wire Sculpture Workshop with Linda Lewin
We’re delighted to be able to offer you the chance to join Linda Lewin for a three-day wire sculpture workshop in our classroom on Brighton beach. This is a rare opportunity to learn from Linda on the south coast as she is more usually to be found in her workshop in Stobo, Peeblesshire (a very satisfyingly named region of the Scottish borders).
Linda trained in Sheffield and is hugely experienced artist-jeweller with more than forty years experience making commission work, exhibiting with galleries and teaching. Linda also turns her hand to creating sculptures with soft iron wire, a process she describes as ‘drawing in three dimensions’.
“I have enjoyed drawing all my life but the struggle of reducing three dimensions onto a flat piece of paper often left me feeling a little disappointed. When I discovered I could draw in three dimensions with wire I was satisfied.
“The pieces start out as an amorphous tangle but I compress the wire and sew it together and gradually the shape solidifies in my hand. This slight stiffening and coming to life is a very similar feeling to the ‘contact’ I have with my real-life horse through my hand and rein.
“My method of compressing and sewing wire into shape allows me to experiment and find the character and movement of each animal as work progresses. When the form is right I can see it. When the form is wrong I can change it. At some unknown point the work acquires an independent life of its own and I put it down. Finished.”
Soft iron wire is the perfect medium for expressing movement and drama, and Linda will teach you how to use pliers and simple wire working techniques which are easily transferable to a home studio setting. Over the course of three days, you will work from drawings and photographs to make a small-scale animal sculpture suitable for an indoor or outdoor setting.
Don’t miss your chance to learn from Linda this October, and enjoy Brighton in its early Autumnal glory.
Saturday 15th - Monday 17th October, 10am to 4pm, £280.00.
