The central figure is an avenging angel of the future, still with wings weighed down by the industrial age, with a scene from it in the background. The figure in the glasshouse is Marianne North, the plant collector, representing the other side of that era, with it exoticism and collections, while the age that made so much of modern life possible would also go on to poison those natural wonders up to the present day.
