About the artist:
Kate Aughey’s mixed media collages are rooted in nostalgia with visual threads linking the folklore of our past with the absurdity of the present. Each analogue collage is constructed from found photographs, vintage documents, magazines and knitting patterns which are often reconfigured several times, sharing an inkling of their blended histories. Motifs recur like echoes of childhood when stories and ritual allowed us to make sense of an uncertain world. Kate is drawn to animals as symbols and in particular snakes, whose symbolic duality represents both fear and death as well as rebirth. Kate explores the interplay between ease and a creeping sense of the uncanny through her whimsical characters, which often convey a sense of the ridiculous. In her ‘Domestic Shaman’ and ‘Quiet Folk’ series, found photographs conjure archetypal characters whose connections to nature evoke myths which feel both familiar and strange. Kate currently lives and works from her home studio in Wiltshire.
