Oil on cradled panel.

”Seated on the sane, a woman gazes outward, holding a red can. The bold horizon and flat blue cal contrast with the subtle tension in her posture. It's a portrait of rest, reflection and understated resilience.”

About the artist:
These oil paintings reflect fleeting moments observed on Hove Beach during the lockdown years. Drawn to the quiet resilience and ordinariness of people seeking solace by the sea, I captured figures as they stood, sat, entered or emerged from the water - each absorbed in their own world. There's a stillness to these scenes, a kind of suspended time where gesture, light , and reflection replace conversation. For many, the beach became a stage for solitude, small rituals, and understood connection. Working from memory and sketches, I focused on posture and pattern, letting the figures merge gently with sea and sky. This series explores our relationship with the natural world and with each other when routines fell away and being outside became both escape and necessity. The everyday becomes quietly monumental - sun on a shoulder, a hand in cold water, a pause before swimming. These are portraits not of individuals, but of shared experience and fleeting presence.
