Amanda Doughty’s Treasure
A collaboration inspired by geometry, mythology, and the sea.

”The night before Amanda’s piece arrived, I rewatched The Shape of Water, a film that speaks of magic and eternal love between a lovely woman who cannot speak and a mystical amphibious man-creature. To my surprise, when I opened her parcel, I was struck by the circular form of her “floatie” a piece Amanda found by Brighton’s Sea. It immediately felt part message, part mystery.”

”Amanda’s own jewellery work is defined by simplicity and thoughtful contrasts: architectural lines, light and dark, smooth and worn, thoughtful use of colour. In contrast, her found object her “floatie” has a beautifully aged surface, like something ancient and enduring.”

”Inspired by this, I imagined a guardian spirit rising from the waters of Brighton. I was drawn to the Aztec god Tlaloc, whose ringed eyes mirrored Amanda’s form. From simple shapes—circles, half-circles, squares I created my “Lady of Brighton”: a sea creature, a deity, a protective talisman. Gold accents and textured finishes attempt to mimic Amanda’s treasure the sense of a long-lost relic resurfaced to tell a new story.”

Iris De La Torre designs colourful and playful graphics which she transforms into jewellery, accessories and objects. Her work is inspired by Mexican Folk Arts and Crafts and the magic of 1960s graphic design. She considers thoughtfully and consciously every aspect of the design of a piece to ensure that it will have presence and longevity, so that the owner would love to keep it and look after it forever. She doesn’t follow fashion trends, but instead she draws inspiration from nature, history and life experiences that are close to her heart. Iris’ jewellery is mainly made by Perspex acrylic sheet; a recyclable material. She plans her work very well so that there is absolute minimum waste of materials. She assembles all pieces by hand in her Surrey studio with materials sourced, laser cut and digitally printed by her suppliers in the United Kingdom. Her aim is to produce an innovative graphic design narrative through her work and make a finished piece of jewellery design, object of illustration of which she is proud and embodies fun hope and optimism.
