Maker info: Victoria is a Brighton-based artist who creates instinctive anti-concept paintings and drawings. Working with a range of surfaces, she accrues layers and stories of acrylic, collage, sand and salt to produce a tactile record of process. Each piece situates a search for a new somatic language, often becoming dynamic and imprecise, with diluted paint drenching the canvas, or spontaneous brushstrokes remaining manifest. Wild elements balance with compositional statements, resulting in pieces which have a provocative equilibrium. Victoria’s work has a presence similar to the natural phenomena of rock, roots, plant-life, skies, soils and waterways, without directly referencing these. In both the details and overall impacts of the pieces, an organic sensibility is evident, reminiscent of primitive art. In this way, this maverick flesh-and-blood work invites us out of the head and into the now.
