Course summary:
Come fill a sketchbook in 2 days, working directly on the beach. Be inspired by the sea and the senses - wind and salt on your skin; the sound of waves, and people’s voices; the twisting flight of sea gulls; shifting pebbles underfoot.
Using ink, pastels, drawing materials, mixed media and some collage, you will be encouraged to play and let loose in long concertina sketchbooks, moving back and forth in them like the tide. This maybe a new approach to the sketchbook for some, letting it unfold, working non-chronologically, layering, changing, going with the flow, observing the accidental.
Where weather allows, you will be working outside directly in response to the beach, though not necessarily from observation. Having the studio so close to the beach means we can dip in and out of the studio space, to look at the sketchbooks as they evolve, to share work and ideas with others in the group, and to continue working on them in the stillness of the studio, making changes, layering, creating space for the next trip outside.
These sketchbooks will evolve as the workshop continues. Day 1 will be all about gathering marks, immersing in the experience. Day 2 will be a chance to digest, revisit pages, develop the imagery, and experiment further with your own work. There will be guided meditations throughout the course to help you engage with your bodily sense of place and stay present to the sensations as well as the visual.
Suitable for all, including beginners.
