Atelier OPEN: Meet the Artist Nick Everitt

by Nick Everitt

Pencil drawing on paper.

Dimensions: 67 x 92 cm.

The Atelier OPEN exhibition continues at our beachside contemporary art gallery and we've invited our exhibiting artists to tell us a bit more about themselves and their work. With 150 exhibitors, and just three weeks to go, we'll try to fit in as many as possible!

Today Nick Everitt tells us about his drawing from the unconscious...
x
My drawing (below) was made from a small metal found object. It's part of a series of three made around the same time investigating pattern. All my work comes from the unconscious. It draws itself; where there are indications of direction, I follow.
x
I have seen in Italy and Spain, in the mountains where there is little flat land around villages and towns, that they create cemeteries like stacked boxes above ground. This is what the drawing became. The tree forms (above) seemed to wrap around so I followed that. There is a dark centre; perhaps a dark tree soul. I had used masking fluid at the early stages that seemed to represent a white clear soul within each structure. So that’s how it evolved.

I have always been interested in what it is that my eye falls upon randomly, without pre-cognition; often a small object. I like to beach comb. I'm always stuffing odd things into a suitcase after a holiday.

I studied at Goldsmiths for fine art and sculpture. Now I am part time as an artist, with my own studio in my garden.
x
I am relatively new to exhibiting but have had an exhibition in 2021 at Kate Howe studios in Hampton Wick, and have just enjoyed Richmond Art House Open Studios showing in my house.
x
My desert island artwork would be something cheery and full of colour; maybe Matisse.

You can see more of my work online at my website and Artfinder as well.
