Amanda Sumpter is preoccupied
After the crowded walls of Atelier OPEN, it's a welcome change of pace to have the quiet and contemplative work of Amanda Sumpter in the gallery.
Working first as a painter and then as an installation and performance artist, drawing has always been a constant activity for Amanda who describes it as "bridging the gap between thinking and intuition".
In 2014 a chance encounter with stone carving and letter cutting introduced her to processes that have enabled her to directly apply her intuitive way of working in three dimensions, with each carving evolving like a drawing.
We asked her to tell us a little more about her creative process.

Our third arch here at Atelier Beside the Sea is home to the Beehive Art Club - a community art group that supports those who have suffered from bereavement and isolation during the pandemic. It’s a chance for group members to explore their creativity and learn new skills. One regular member said "I like the opportunity to make art and make new friends. I find this is one of the few things in the week that can make me leave the house when feeling down and overwhelmed. The level of art tutorship is fantastic." Wire Sculpture Workshop with Linda Lewin
We’re delighted to be able to offer you the chance to join Linda Lewin for a three-day wire sculpture workshop in our classroom on Brighton beach. This is a rare opportunity to learn from Linda on the south coast as she is more usually to be found in her workshop in Stobo, Peeblesshire (a very satisfyingly named region of the Scottish borders).
Linda trained in Sheffield and is hugely experienced artist-jeweller with more than forty years experience making commission work, exhibiting with galleries and teaching. Linda also turns her hand to creating sculptures with soft iron wire, a process she describes as ‘drawing in three dimensions’.

Artist Exclusives at Atelier - Hannah Forward
Hannah Forward has built quite a following as a printmaker since she got hooked on the medium in 2013. Graduating from Brighton University in 2006 with a degree in graphic design, Hannah worked as an editorial illustrator for newspapers and magazines before discovering her métier. Her linocut ‘Cassette Tapes’ was selected by Grayson Perry for the 2018 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and she was selected for a second time in 2019 with her print ‘Cameras’.
Many of Hannah’s large-scale, multi-block linocut prints depict line-ups of nostalgic gadgets in indulgent detail. Alongside her cassette tapes and cameras, are vinyl records, Walkmans and synthesizers; their knobs and dials picked out in flashes of neon and metallic.
