About the artist:
Clare Blatchford-Hanna is a West Sussex based mixed media artist working in paint, collage and drawing, built up in multiple layers to create richly textured surfaces. The Shape of Things, Creature Series explores how the brain seeks to make sense of fragmentary information, recognising the familiar even through distortion, changed colour or partial form. The animals and birds emerge from what appears to be chaos, rooted in fleeting observations from the garden and countryside, a swoosh of tail, a rustle, a shadow glimpsed at the corner of the eye. Colour, layering and mark-making transform the unfamiliar back into the familiar, a metaphor for finding meaning in an often erratic world.
