Dee Barnes’ collection celebrates the character, mystery and enduring appeal of cats through a series of hand-built ceramic works. Inspired by her fascination with historic ceramics, decorative arts and storytelling, she combines playful imagery with richly patterned and highly embellished surfaces. Cats feature throughout the collection as both subjects and characters, their independence, curiosity and expressive personalities providing endless inspiration. Each piece explores a different aspect of the feline world, from the humorous and mischievous to the elegant and enigmatic. Working primarily earthenware clay with coiling and slab-building techniques, Dee creates individual pieces transforming them through layers of coloured slips, underglazes, oxides and lustres.
