A lino cut print on Acrylic paper draws inspiration from a hand calved neolythic stone depicting daily life. Added to this are vinyl stickers, painted using fluid acrylic, squeezed, printed and finger painted straight from the tube. Shapes and figures become apparent once the paint has dried. Once their emoji influenced identifying features are applied the finished stickers are stuck to the surface to interact and tell a story.

About the artist:
Jenny Nelson’s art practice is inspired by the everyday signs and symbols we use to communicate with ourselves and others. This interest developed during lockdown, when using WhatsApp highlighted how emojis, ticks, and other digital markers shape meaning and recreate everyday interactions online. Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, Jenny explores the shift from analogue to digital communication. The sharing of thoughts, experiences, and images, often layered with subtext, sits at the centre of her work. With a background in early years education and textile crafts, she uses hands-on processes and materials such as shrink plastic, yarn, sticker vinyl, and epoxy resin to reflect the limitations of online communication. Her work also connects to hieroglyphs and prehistoric cave paintings, highlighting a constant human need to communicate through symbols despite evolving technologies.
