Spring gardens, Brighton and Hove

Inspired by the signs of spring in Brighton and Hove's regency squares & crescents with blossom appearing in their gardens adjacent the seafront, from series of 'framescapes' which are painted across a central wooden panel & frame, the landscape continuing uninterrupted from image into surround. Intimate enough to hold, designed to reward close looking, each is a complete world in miniature.

About the artist:
Nichola Campbell is a Sussex-based artist working in Indian inks, an ancient luminous medium whose sparkling intensity & immediacy suits her deeply instinctive way of working. She paints from feeling rather than formula, from memory rather than location, drawn always by the particular quality of light, colour & atmosphere that Sussex offers in such extraordinary abundance. Her Framescapes are small paintings which dissolve the boundary between painting & object. Working on wooden framed panels, the landscape continues across both the central panel & frame - the sky, sea, meadow, light, flowing uninterrupted from image into surround. Intimate enough to hold, designed to reward close looking, each is a complete world in miniature. She is drawn instinctively to break convention - light & atmosphere were subjects in their own right, the frame is more than a boundary, her subjects familiar but seen afresh from somewhere deeper & less easily explained.
