What we choose to wear is important; it forms part of our identity, personality and culture. I wanted the figure to be small within the image, initially making her appear vulnerable, the dark block of ‘the corner’ digging into her bare thigh. It’s uncomfortable. Yet, look closer, and she challenges the viewer with her fierce gaze, making them feel uncomfortable for looking at her – even though she is, supposedly, in a public space ‘on the corner.’
Linocut print on Zerkall paper of 145gsm wiht Cranfield caligo safewash inks.

About the artist:
Polly Marix Evans is a contemporary artist and printmaker living and working in Cumbria. She works primarily in linocut, creating prints that show contrasting areas of black on white, with the occasional bold block of colour, and sharp angles encasing her figurative work. Polly’s approach to block printing offers a unique and refreshing perspective on this medium, emphasising compositional space over realistic detail. Combining the quirky alongside deeper issues, her art offers something for everyone in the emotional tombola of life. Polly’s work has garnered acclaim over the past decade, with her limited-edition prints displayed in selected galleries and private collections, both in the UK and internationally, with recent shows at Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition (2025), Leicester Print Workshop Small Print International (2026), Rock & Paper Collective Exhibition, London (2026)
