Hanging by a Thread

HANGING BY A THREAD, an idiom that means something is in a very precarious condition implying a high degree of risk and a low chance of survival; and yet, through our actions, we can help to turn the course of our troubled earth by treating it more gently. In this spirit, the work has been slowly and meticulously created using traditional weaving techniques and local, low-impact materials. It conveys darkness and contradiction, but also possibility. There is always hope.

About the artist:
Rosalind Stoddart is a sustainable textile artist based in Northamptonshire, England. The way she lives, works and uses traditional making processes, are deeply rooted in the natural world and her immediate environment: Rosalind uses fleece shorn from her alpacas and flax that she has grown, and dye using flowers and plants that have been cultivated and foraged from her garden. She creates work that sits at the intersection of nature, art and ecology, using weaving techniques, felting, spinning and stitching. Each artwork is a vehicle for messages about the urgency of the climate crisis and the importance of a sustainable way of life as well as aesthetically engaging with the audience. Her work is characterized by its slow and intuitive nature, an approach that requires a patience of moving in harmony with the rhythms of the seasons and the changing climate and reflects her belief in art as a form of stewardship.
