About the artist:
Sophie Alice Wiltshire is a ceramic artist based in Hampshire. Sophie’s current work takes inspiration from the wild, and our ancient connections with it, through stories, costume, and the emotions that nature provokes in us such as curiosity, fear, and play. The theme of the leaf, as something to conceal, or clothe was influenced by her love of early English pottery, in particular Staffordshire flatbacks and their use of moulded leaves, known as bocage. The creatures Sophie has created are examples of what might be lurking in the undergrowth, be it dreamt up in our imaginations or as an all too real threat. Sophie creates each work entirely by hand, using carved moulds to create hundreds of individual components which she then uses to cover her hand built forms. It is a time consuming but rewarding process.
