About the artist:
Sophie Ambelas’ work embodies a sense of fluidity—as if it’s always in motion, evolving just as we do as people. Deeply rooted in her Greek heritage, her practice draws inspiration from the layers of history, culture, and identity that shape who we are. In the series The Amphora Era, she explores layers—physical and symbolic—as traces of time. Rooted in ancient classical form yet reaching toward the futuristic, they hold a tension between past and becoming. Clay coils are stretched to the brink of collapse, caught mid-motion and suspended, each layer wrapped into the next. They echo the way we hold one another—how stability is often collective, how fragility is carried. Sophie approaches ceramics in an unorthodox way, allowing the clay to follow its own path and memory. She frequently incorporates unexpected materials and finishes pieces with vibrant acrylic colours, pushing the traditional boundaries of the medium.
