About the artist:
Susannah Peacock worked in design, conservation architecture and illustration before returning to sculpture. Her work is ornate and allegorical, referring to folklore, antiquity and fairy tales. Charming as her work is, it often holds a warning...Her recent collection is a reaction to the human consumption of beautiful and rare animals. 900 species have become extinct due to human intervention since 1500. What if there were far more? What if the creatures from Medieval illuminated texts and maps were real and were hunted to extinction? To illustrate the collecting-to-extinction behaviour, Susannah has created collectors boxes that are packed with discarded and forgotten rare and beautiful creatures; seahorse unicorns, mermaids, horns ripped from mythical beasts, strange gods and ferocious sea creatures. Together, they make an irresistible treasure trove. Susannah has developed her own high fired ceramics and combines modern modelling materials and jewelry techniques to create her work.
