About the artist:
Gabriela Szulman is a London-based artist working in acrylic and mixed media collage on paper and wood supports. Based in Camberwell, her practice draws on a growing archive of ephemera, including old encyclopaedias, technical manuals, illustrated dictionaries, and books of 18th-century drawings and etchings, alongside fragments of classical imagery sourced from public collections. These elements are intuitively cut, layered and reassembled into dreamlike compositions where logic gives way to imagination. Her work brings together humour, rich colour, surface pattern and unexpected juxtapositions, forming whimsical yet evocative connections between images. Emerging from a fusion of painting, mark-making and collage, her compositions evoke a sense of magical realism, where familiar forms dissolve and recombine. The resulting works invite viewers into playful, poetic worlds shaped by memory, association and visual surprise, where meaning remains fluid and open to interpretation.
