About the artist:
Helen Benton is a Brighton based collage artist and screen-printer, she considers herself to be feminist artist, all her work is about social conditioning. Her work plays with and questions the cultural norms of the times she grew up in. She finds this fascinating and difficult as the news fills with atrocities against women and culturally there seems to be a drift towards more misogynistic norms. She is curious about how ingrained social conditioning of children impacts society. Her work comments and challenges perceptions and expectations on people through her use of iconography and colour. At first glance you might not notice the harder and more uncomfortable edge that her subversive screen prints present.
