Born in London, Josef relocated to Brighton in 2003. He originally completed a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at Central St Martins and later an MA at the University of Brighton. He has practiced both as a graphic designer, illustrator and laterly as an academic art librarian. Josef’s art practice is varied but is primarily painting based, often with a graphic design sensibility. His work is concerned with human relationships framed by his own intersectional identity. Outlines, cut-out figures, animals serving as metaphor for human conditions, texture; these core elements mingle with additional influences such as a fascination with stained glass windows and 1970's-80's underground New York club culture. Josef also experiments with digital illustration sometimes physically cutting out the printed illustration and reconstructing in a layered form as a relief work inspired by his early love of record shop cut out promotional items.
