Sam Bryan is an artist and printmaker based in Bristol. She shares her home with two tuxedo cats, Holly and Ivy, whose quirky personalities influence her work. Sam’s practice is inspired by being referred to as a cat lady. This led Sam to question where this label came from and if she liked it. She began to explore the origins of the cat lady and the bond between cats and humans. Through expressive, vibrant wax pastel drawings (her favourite medium) and colourful screen prints, Sam’s work celebrates the independence, joy and connection between humans and cats. These works celebrate the eccentric and unapologetic world of the domestic cat. Sam’s work shows our feline companions are more than just cute pets. They are resilient animals with strong personalities and clear boundaries. Sam aims to reclaim the cat lady label through her artwork and turn it into a symbol of radical self acceptance.
