Susan Halls has been obsessed with animals all her life. Early investigations into making ceramic creatures began whilst she was a student at Medway College of Art and Design 1984-88. She continued these explorations at the Royal College of Art and has been re-examining a handful of species ever since – Dog, bird, rabbit, pig and CAT are reoccurring themes. Her intention is to reinvent form and anatomy, her point of view being highly personal, often resulting in exaggerated, grotesque forms that capture the truth, rather than the beauty of the beasts. For thirty years. Raku and other primitive firing techniques were her favoured method of dealing with surface and colour, however, she is currently exploring high fired glazes including salt firing, preferring it's stony strength and density.
